Leave accruals reaccredited for Wodonga home carers

The City of Wodonga Aged and Disability carers have been successful in having their leave accruals reaccredited for work outside of the spread of ordinary hours and weekends.

Wodonga City Council (WCC) – going back to 2001 – weren’t recognising rostered work outside the spread of ordinary hours and weekends for approximately seven carers for the purposes of leave accruals. After initial discussions with ASU delegates Wendy Cox and Wendy Wilson, Wodonga City Council sought legal advice and came to the conclusion that work performed outside the spread of ordinary hours and weekend work would not count towards leave accruals.

The ASU and their delegates then met with Management representatives from WCC to make them aware of our members’ award entitlements, which states all rostered hours be recognised for the purposes of all leave accruals.

Wodonga then revisited their position and agreed that the award provisions should apply and have agreed to reinstate lost leave accruals dating back to 2001 for all affected carers.

ASU organiser Cameron Wright thanked Wodonga’s delegates after WCC’s pleasing decision.

“I would firstly like to thank our delegate Wendy Cox for her initial discovery of the problem. It certainly makes my job easier to have delegates such as Wendy, who are prepared to tackle management on behalf of members they represent at their workplace. Initial calculations could see members’ leave accruals reaccredited at some significant levels.”
