Anna Stewart, a former journalist and active Victorian union official from 1974 to 1983, died tragically in 1983 aged 35. Anna's involvement with the union movement began at a time when women workers comprised one-third of the paid workforce, but the few industries in which women were employed, offered jobs that were poorly paid, lacked job security and skills recognition.
The work of such a remarkable woman should not be forgotten, and as a result the Anna Stewart Memorial Project was created. The project consists of on-the job training for rank & file women. It is aimed at providing participants access to unions and by doing so increasing awareness of union structures and how these impact upon women. More info on the Anna Stewart Memorial Project
