The ASU has started to campaign to get rid of the LGI because it is a threat to all council workers. As part of the Recover Our Rights campaign we are asking people to send the Premier and other key Ministers an email asking them to get rid of the LGI.

Dear Premier Brumby, You recently set up the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate (LGI) to investigate and prosecute people who breach the Local Government Act. I write this email to you to tell you that while I do not support corruption or illegal activities in any government I am alarmed about the following things to do with the LGI. • The loss of my legal right to silence – even murderer’s have this; • Inspectors have strong coercive powers which can be used against me or ‘any person’ including my family and friends; • If I don’t want to attend and interview harsh penalties of up to 2 years jail and $28,000 apply even if I have done nothing wrong and have nothing to answer for; • There are many similarities between the LGI and ABCC, which the International Labour Organisation has said breaches Australia’s international human rights obligations. I think that the LGI’s powers are a threat to everyone’s basic human rights because they are so broad, largely unregulated and the laws can apply to any person. I call on you and your government to overturn these harsh laws and abolish the LGI at the earliest possible opportunity.
